Stories Over Stadiums: The New Engine of Global Sports Travel

Summary:

Facilities matter, but for international growth they’re increasingly table stakes. What differentiates destinations now is meaning: the stories people recognize, the values they share, and the community they can plug into quickly. Borderless Belonging suggests that while place can recruit fans, emotion and story are what keep them – and these story systems are increasingly how modern audiences navigate sport across borders.

This session reframes destination competitiveness through a cultural lens: how to position events with story frames that travel (identity, underdogs, icons, redemption/resilience, community values), and how to design accessible entry points so international visitors can belong “in the moment,” even without lifelong loyalty. The emphasis is practical: story-led strategy can strengthen bid narratives, make experiences more inclusive, and help partners contribute to community in ways that fans actually reward — which in turn supports sustainable visitation and repeat demand.
