Sports present special situations, given the power imbalance, in which some individuals groom athletes and perpetrate abuse. This presentation highlights the Center’s role and function, the nature and scope of the problem regarding abuse, why Sports ETA members should get invested in athlete well-being, and how they can prevent and respond to abuse in various sports organizations.

Speaker: Dan Mills, U.S. Center for SafeSport

Sponsorship Track: Sports Facilities - Industry Trends

Strategy Track: Getting Your Turn at Bat: How to Make an Impact with Local Officials

As the lines between tourism, event creation, and economic development grow increasingly blurry, it is important to have a voice with elected officials, government agencies, and other community leaders.  In Rhode Island, a group of hospitality and tourism officials have developed a support system that allows them to come together on issues affecting their industry, while also pursuing creative partnerships that benefit their individual organizations.  Among their recent successes:

  • Building a coalition to successfully lobby state legislators to approve distributing Air BNB taxes to destination marketing organizations, as well as to strike down a proposed hotel tax increase.
  • Blurring the lines between economic development and tourism marketing to communicate the value of tourism industry and offer new services to planners.
  • Creating a Tourism Management District to bolster tourism marketing efforts.
Speakers
Kristen Adamo, President & CEO, Providence Warwick CVB
Sarah Bratko, Vice President of Advocacy & General Counsel, Rhode Island Hospitality Association
