Session 1 - Administration

The primary objective of this session is to provide participants a better understanding of 5 key administrative components that are vital to the successful operation of a sports complex. The key components that will be discussed are; labor recruitment and labor planning, facility management, legal, insurance, and finance vs accounting. The presentation will be focused on facilities whose target audience is primarily youth sporting event producers and industry related best practices.


Session 2 - Culture and Labor

How important is creating a culture of service for your sports complex?  Learn about the basics on how to create a framework for success which leads to better business.

Session 3 - Facility Management 
10:40 a.m. - 11:30 am
Speaker - Michael Grade, VP of Sports Operations, Atlanta Sports City

The goal of this session is to provide a better understanding of the best practices required to efficiently operate sports facilities. Topics covered will range from pre-development planning to facility operation during events to post-event facility maintenance. The presentation will also discuss how decisions regarding these topics must be driven by the desired customer experience, and how each contributes to the creation of that experience.


Session 4 - Programming/Business Development

Speaker - Mike Guswiler, President, West Michigan Sports Commission

Build it and they will come?  When investing $10’s of millions of dollars in new sport infrastructure, we can’t sit back and hope user groups approach us.  In this session, we’ll outline methods and practical solutions to filling capacity of this new community asset.


Session 5 - Event Operations

Speakers - Matt Libber, Executive Director, Maryland SoccerPlex
Ben Huffman, CSEE, Director of Sports Enterprises, Warren County CVB

Facilities operate events on a daily basis, this session will take a deep dive on how to raise the level of those events while benefitting the community around you and protecting yourself. Matt Libber, Maryland SoccerPlex, and Ben Huffman, Warren County Sports Park, have run a variety of sports tourism events for more than 20 years and will discuss event operations from an event producer and a destination standpoint.  They will focus in this session on risk management, communication, partnerships, and event documentation with a sports tourism focus.    


Session 6 - Round Tables
3:00 p.m. - 4:00 pm

These roundtable discussions are designed to allow all participants to ask specific questions or share best practices in each of the topic sessions covered in the previous discussions. This is a great time to learn from each other and how specific aspects of facility management are handled.


Session 7 - Recap and Close Out
4:00 p.m. - 4:45 pm

We will come back together as a group to recap the days discussions and best practices shared.
