Sports Backers announce ‘Great American 5000’ virtual race across America starting June 14

Feeding America to serve as event charity partner for 5,000-kilometer challenge Richmond, VA – Sports Backers, one of the nation’s leading nonprofit active-living advocacy organizations, is announcing their new ‘Great American 5000’ virtual race beginning on Flag Day, June 14. In the endurance challenge, participating teams compete with the aim of covering the 5,000-kilometer (3,100-mile) distance of a pre-selected course between the Pacific Ocean in San Francisco and Atlantic Ocean in New York. Registration is now open for the event, and course details and group registration information are available at www.GreatAmerican5000.org.  During the event, teams of up to 12 or 24 members will collectively run for a maximum 24 hours each day and report how far they covered at the end of that 24-hour period. For those who are working from home, you have probably found some great positives - no microwave meals for lunch, a more relaxed work attire, etc. On the other hand, you may have longer work hours and realize weekends are a thing of the past. Richmond, Virginia has a small-town charm, big-city entertainment, passionate fans, and competitive athletes.  That’s how Jerrine Lee, the Director of Sports Development at Richmond Region Tourism, describes her town.   The Richmond Region has become a great place to visit or hold a sporting event. The area itself is one of the most-central destinations on the East Coast making it an easy drive for many. Richmond is an outdoor playground with class III and IV rapids running right through downtown making it a picturesque place for a vacation. The Membership Directory is broken up into three parts: Event Owners, Vendors, and Destinations. As a member, you can look up specific companies, organizations, or people and directly download their contact information. Members are able to include a short bio on their profile so you can learn more about them. Each directory is searchable and you can filter results into market size, sport, or state making it easy for you to find exactly what you are looking for. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought life to a screeching halt, particularly in the sports community. Competitions, practices, and in-person training sessions have been canceled or postponed. While athletic teams are benched, many coaches are taking advantage of online tools to keep athletes engaged and at peak performance. As many of you already know, online communication poses unique safety risks. Youth and people with disabilities already experience high rates of abuse[1], and increased time online may heighten their risk. Parents may be relaxing their existing rules for screen time and internet usage. Younger athletes may have more unsupervised technology time. Athletes of all ages may start using new apps and platforms or using familiar ones differently.
