I must confess that I do not read as much as I should, something that I hope to change in the New Year.
My neighbor is retired and he spends a lot of time in and around his yard. His efforts there are productive as he has a great lawn and it looks amazing through the growing cycle.
Many years ago, on our Public Television Station there was a regular program that was hosted by Jerry Baker, America’s Master Gardener. My wife recently purchased a book from him, “Fast Fixes and Miracle Mixes for your Lawn and Garden.” Inside, is over 300 pages of lawn care cures and home remedies for your lawn and garden.
Our winter here in Dayton, OH seems to have started early as we had our first snow and ice in mid-November. I did not get around to it, but one of the recipes in the book for Fall Lawn Food application included:
1 bag of low-nitrogen dry lawn food (enough for 2,500 square feet)
3 lbs. of Epsom Salts
1 cup of gentle dry laundry soap (not detergent)...

“Optimism is a happiness magnet. If you stay positive, good things and good people will be drawn to you.” – Mary Lou Retton
When you look back on the people who have influenced your life, do you find a common trait? In my experience, the people I remember the longest and the fondest are the ones who had upbeat personalities. Teachers who encouraged me through challenging classes, friends and family who reassured me through difficult times, and professional mentors who always helped guide me – these are the people who have touched my soul and have inspired me to be that person in other people’s lives.
Looking for the good in every situation is who I aspire to be. I am a work in progress, but I consciously make an effort to direct my focus on the bright side, the possibilities and the solutions. Moving into a leadership role has shown me that my actions and attitude shape those around me. As a team, we are more productive when our work envi...
Although I have attended the NASC Market Segment Meetings in the past, I did not attend the inaugural 4S Summit in 2017. In all honesty, with new leadership and changes to the organization, I thought it best to “sit this one out” and evaluate the feedback post-event.
Between the FOMO (fear of missing out) and the extremely positive feedback I received from industry peers, there wasn’t a chance I was going to miss out on year two. I wanted to personally experience what was making the 4S Summit different from the past Market Segment Meetings. And, as a long-standing mentor, it was important for me to share this experience with both new members to the Association and future first time attendees.
From the moment I arrived onsite, familiar faces were surrounding me…in the hotel lobby, in the hotel restaurant, and even on the hotel elevators. Right off the bat, the sense of camaraderie was evident. To kick off the Summit, the atten...
HOUSTON, TX – Houston Dynamo and Dash President Chris Canetti has announced his resignation from the club today after 13 seasons. Canetti will remain with the team through the end of his contract, which expires December 31, 2018, and assist in the transition of leadership.
Canetti will move on to become the President of the Houston World Cup Bid Committee, which will be run by the Harris County – Houston Sports Authority. The Houston World Cup Bid Committee has been formed as part of an effort to bring the 2026 World Cup to Houston. Canetti will begin his new role in January of 2019, and work under the leadership of Janis Burke, the Sports Authority’s CEO.
“Today, I am filled with mixed emotions. I love this club, cherish my time here, and feel sadness about it coming to an end,” Canetti said, “but I am confident that is the right time to move on to the next challenge. And with this next challenge comes the opportunity to work on something vita...

As you register for the 2019 NASC Symposium, May 6-9 in Knoxville, set aside time to take a look around our host city while you’re there.
While Knoxville may be best known as the home of the University of Tennessee, it holds the distinction of being the smallest city to host of a World’s Fair when it held the event in 1982. The Sunsphere Tower left over from the fair remains a skyline fixture. Springtime in the South is always a great time to visit, and here are some activities you might want to check out while you’re at the Symposium:
Knox Brew Tours:
Tours are held weekly on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and it’s a good way to experience Knoxville’s growing beer scene with someone else driving. Find out times and details at www.knoxbrewtours.com.
Knoxville Walking Tours:
Experience a closeup look at the pioneers, soldiers, outlaws and even fictional characters that have given Knoxville a colorful past. They include looks at the Civil War,...
The 4S Summit is headed to Cleveland, OH in a few weeks! The summit kicks off with a Reception at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. A great opportunity to get together with your colleagues, share your stories and enjoy the history of Rock and Roll!
The 4S Summit provides an opportunity for all of us to discuss our commonalities. The commonalities could be challenges we are facing or successes that we want to share. My motto “Why recreate the wheel, when I could learn from others’ successes and challenges.” The opportunity to learn from the NASC members is one of the best learning tools at the tip of your fingers.
Be ready to learn more on the 4S’s of sports events and tourism: sponsorships, sales, services and strategies. The sports events and tourism industry has many commonalities within these 4S’s. Is your organization focusing on strategies to have the community more engaged with your sports events? Looking to learn new bidding best practices...
