Happy New Year and welcome to the January 2025 edition of the Sports ETA Facility Showcase! This month, the spotlight is on the Eco's Sports Park in sunny Puerto Rico. Keep reading to the end for the “Key Difference Maker” as this insight can add perspective to your own facility.
Location, Location, Location
When it comes to sports facilities, location is everything—and Eco’s Sports Park is no exception. Nestled within Parque Luís Muñoz Marín, this outdoor multi-sport complex is part of a dynamic hub that also includes iconic venues like the Hiram Bithorn Stadium and the Pedrín Zorrilla Coliseum.
The park is supported by Discover Puerto Rico, the island’s official destination marketing organization (DMO). Established in 2017, Discover Puerto Rico has championed tourism as a transformative force for the island’s economy, working to position Puerto Rico as a top-tier destination for leisure, business, and events.
Blending Culture and Sports Innovation
Eco’s Sports Park is a reflection of Puerto Rico’s rich cultural identity and commitment to innovation. By combining standard sports amenities with unique, locally inspired features, the park has created an environment that appeals to athletes, families, and visitors alike.
Here’s a look at the park’s impressive facilities:
- Three soccer fields, including futsal dimensions that can combine to create a larger field for additional sports.
- Three lit sand courts for beach volleyball and beach tennis.
- Two indoor courts for basketball, volleyball, and futsal.
- Two padel courts, the first of their kind in Puerto Rico, offering a hybrid of tennis and squash.
- Outdoor recreation space, including a 4,000-square-foot area for movie nights and family-friendly games.
- On-site amenities include concession stands with local cuisine, a rooftop bar, and a sports store.
Notably, the park was developed on repurposed parking space at a cost of $25 million, showcasing how underutilized areas can be transformed into thriving sports hubs.
Sustainability Meets Smart Design
Eco’s Sports Park is a prime example of climate-centric “Adapted Product” design, a concept that ensures the park aligns with its environmental surroundings. Built in 2012, its architecture reflects Puerto Rico’s climate and prioritizes sustainability and cost-efficiency.

Key sustainable features include:
- Renewable energy: A 40-kilowatt solar panel system generates 95% of the park’s electricity needs.
- Eco-friendly materials: The fields use high-grade artificial turf designed for durability and sustainability.
- Cost-efficient design: The park leverages natural elements to reduce operational costs and environmental impact.
Family / Community Focused Attitude
Eco’s Sports Park is more than a venue—it’s a community hub. Every week, the park welcomes an average of 10,000 visitors, not including attendees of its popular theme nights and events. The sports park has 76 employees that are considered “family members” – allowing the park to operate with a “family first” mentality that extends to its guests. The management group is run by a family that gathers their collective strengths to offer the best Puerto Rico experience.
Key Difference Maker: Intentional Climate-Conscious Facility Design
The success of Eco’s Sports Park lies in its intentionality. From its eco-driven solar panels to its celebration of local cuisine, the park is designed to complement its destination rather than compete with it. Its commitment to sustainability, cultural relevance, and self-sufficiency offers a model for facilities everywhere.
Things to think about:
- How can your facility incorporate climate-conscious design principles?
- Are there opportunities to adopt renewable energy or eco-friendly materials?
- What unique features or amenities could reflect your destination’s culture and identity?
