Standardize Your Economic Impact Reporting

 Posted on: June 25 2019
How much are events worth to your destination? Knowledge is power. This applies to sports commissions seeking to understand the economic importance of events to their destinations. By knowing the value of sporting events sold by a sports commission, industry stakeholders are empowered to make a strong case for continued destination marketing. Indeed, the case for destination marketing can hinge on an appreciation of the economic value of key events sold by sports commissions. In partnership with Destinations International, the Event Impact Calculator measures the economic value of a sporting event and calculates its return on investment to local taxes. Armed with this information, sports commissions are better prepared to make the case to policymakers for the ongoing development and growth of the events sector. The Sports Module and platform have been developed by Tourism Economics, an Oxford Economics Company, and includes several Sport Event Types: Youth, Adult Amateur,...

The Future of Sports Betting

 Posted on: June 18 2019
From The Pulse… The Pulse is a research initiative led by Sports ETA to gauge the interest and thoughts of the sports events industry on critical issues and trends. The Future of Sports Betting It’s been a little more than a year since the U.S. Supreme Court overruled the law allowing sports betting in only four states. Since then, state legislatures have been easing their way through the rules and regulations that could make sports betting legal in their states. Is it something that is on the radar of those involved in the sports industry? In a recent survey commissioned by Sports ETA, a third of respondents said right now they are paying little or no attention to individual states’ efforts to add sports betting. Specifically, nearly half of respondents are paying at least some attention to the legislation, nearly a quarter are aware but aren’t following the progress, one in ten say they are only vaguely familiar with sports betting and less tha...

Cycling is riding back into Asheville

 Posted on: June 10 2019
Asheville, North Carolina has hosted many cycling races in the past, so it is no surprise that they picked up another cycling coup: The Gran Fondo National Championships. According to the Asheville Times, the Gran Fondo will guarantee a higher revenue than their most recent race, The Haute Route, since Ashville will be the host for both 2019 and 2020. The Haute Route Asheville was a three-day event held at the end of May 2019. This event brought in about $1 million to the city. Since riders and their families always spend time in local hotels, restaurants, and shops, these events are so exciting for small businesses. Congratulations to the Asheville Sports Commission for all their hard work on these many cycling races. Keep up the good work! View the full article from The Citizen Times.

Bicentennial Celebration increases tourism for Tuscaloosa

 Posted on: June 10 2019
Normally when you hear Tuscaloosa, the University of Alabama comes to mind. It is true that Crimson Tide football remains one of the most popular events in the state, however, a new event is starting to attract tourist attention. Tuscaloosa is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year by having multiple celebrations to attract tourists from outside of the state of Alabama. We have more detailed information thanks to an article released by the Tuscaloosa News last week. According to the article, there was a free Bicentennial Bash in March that was held in the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater, including bands like The 400 Unit, The Blind Boys of Alabama, The Broken Bones, along with others. The biggest day of celebration will be on Dec. 13th, since that was the day the town was founded back in 1819. There will be a statue unveiling and more celebrations to be revealed later. Congratulations to Tuscaloosa Tourism and Sports.

Bucket List 12 for 12

 Posted on: June 5 2019
Stoll On Sports Do you have a "Bucket List"? If so, what's on it? I have a relatively informal one, but one item that has been on my list as long as I can remember is attending the NCAA Division I Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City. This past week, thanks to the graciousness of a dear friend, I got to check that dream off my bucket list. If you followed the WCWS, you know that UCLA won their program's 12th National Championship in impressive fashion last night. In honor of the their 12th time taking home the coveted hardware, this edition of Stoll on Sports features my 12 Lessons Learned from the 2019 WCWS. Pretty close to heaven for the mountain-dwelling tomboy! Here we go...   12. There is nothing better than being at a ballpark on a beautiful summer evening.  Period. Bama v.  Posted on: June 4 2019
If there’s one thing everyone knows about Salt Lake, it’s this: It’s beautiful. A year-round-drop-dead-gorgeous-manicured-city with- majestic-mountains-for-a-background kind of beautiful. But beyond that, what do you really know? 1. We are a sports city.
